| Post subject: | Leaf & Water... what's up with that? |
One of the things demo 1.0.3 has made extremely obvious is that best girl Leaf has a problem with water. She mentions that she dislikes all seafood, she nopes out of your visit to the recreation center when you mention there's a pool, and she also mentions she used to have an interest in marine biology, implying that her aversion to water wasn't always there. So, what do y'all think caused this? Is this going to be played for humor, when Blue's Squirtle Water Guns her and she freaks out? Or will this be played for drama, when she falls off the pier, and struggles, desperately, to stay afloat, before she seizes up at the memory of the tragic loss of her parents aboard that Hoenn-bound cruise ship? Personally, I think this is more serious than set up for a joke. Leaf uses her "eyes squinted, gaze askew" pose only a couple times that I recall, and I'm fairly sure both involve water. {Only half-joking regarding the cruise ship thing, by the way. I've a gut feeling Leaf, or at least her family, is pretty wealthy.} |

A lot of Leaf's characterization is based on Green from the Pokemon Adventure manga. In that manga, Green actually had a phobia of birds because she was kidnapped by a Ho-oh when she was a young child. I'm assuming a similar traumatizing experience related to the ocean happened to Leaf here. |

Does it help that her character bio in v1.0.2 mentioned she was originally from Cinnabar Island and not Pallet Town at this point? It wouldn't hurt to assume that its a clue? |

Oh, I didn't even think of that! Nice one. You've convinced me that Leaf's hydrophobia has something to do with her hometown's destruction, for sure. |
