In the gym, Red says: "Are these guys our teachers? The guy on the left definitely looks like one..." "But the other guy looks like one of those mountain hermits you hear about on TV." But Bruno is on the left, therefore the line should be "...The guy on the right...".

No, this is intentional. Left here literally means left side of the screen. You're facing these characters. You're referring to Alder as the hermit. Bruno looks his part as going in; you don't know if the gym class is meant to be a traditional physical activity oriented class or not. Alder, on the other hand, is dressed in shamanistic, indigenous-like clothes, more akin to people who live off the land (even if he doesn't in actuality). Also, in the core series games, Alder is a nomadic trainer. You can see this as a subtle reference. |

Speaking of Alder and hermits, you can take that to another level  They're so similar in the anime, too. Jiraiya tutors Naruto. Alder tutors Ash. They're both wanderers, sage-like, and have pervy soft spots for women. |
